If it Smells Fishy: Hook, Line and Sinker

Around the Cutting Block

Word around the cutting block is that newspapers will have both RedPlum and Smartsource this weekend. I was lucky enough to get this weekend’s RedPlum from the nice mail man friend I mentioned previously and I personally like the coupons this weekend! :)

DID YOU KNOW?
The Dollar Tree accepts coupons! As long as it is the same product, size, etc that matches your coupon.

HOWEVER if the coupon exceeds the product amount there is no overage (like Wal-Mart in my previous blog) it is priced down to $1.00 making the item free. Keep in mind coupons for JUST FREE items, are not accepted and it is up to the discretion of the store’s managers the bulk amount you can by (assuming your coupon doesn’t have a limit of course!)

Listen Up Baby Couponers: FRAUD and EXTREME COUPONING

So, I’ve come across the topic of fraudulent coupons within the couponing community… This is something to be EVER VIGILANT of. This not only gives couponers a bad rep it is just poor taste. Some might know the incident that happened with several participants of TLC’s show Extreme Couponing where a few people OPENLY used fraudulent coupons on the show and got items for free. This is truly disgusting and is called STEALING, no matter how you slice it or dice it.

So how can you tell a FAKE from a real one?
Besides using the site below, buy your coupons in Newspapers or sellers with a reputation of selling quality merchandise such as Ebay. If it’s too good to be true it may be a fake. Do a little research on that particular coupon if not sure. It’s one thing to mistake a fake for a real one, it’s another to blatantly use them knowingly. Besides nobody likes a crook couponer, the only thing that should be crooked about your couponing are the lines when you cut the coupon out of the insert. Keep it straight (preferably your coupon cutting too lol).

You can find a list of fraudulent coupons here:

But isn’t couponing a form of stealing? NO. Never. When used properly and according to the store’s limitations and manufacturer’s limitations you are doing “smart shopping”. Trying to push off coupons for items you DID NOT BUY or are NOT the same item as your coupon… STEALING. Coupons that have expired and you are trying to push them through.. STEALING (unless you are in the military – you can send expired coupons to different military places for the families of our Armed Forces to use). Be mindful of the coupon’s and store’s policies. If you make a mistake learn from it, but don’t abuse the system. Ultimately couponers will suffer in a change of policy, which apparently already has happened in quite a few places. Do couponing the HONEST way.

Truth About Extreme Couponing (TLC show)

This isn’t Extreme Couponing, but I promise your savings will be.

Let’s be honest. That show is a little off the deep end. In normal day to day life is it possible to score hundreds for less ABSOLUTELY… buying 400 boxes of cat food in one transaction making them free? Not so much.

Like CSI, crimes are not solved that quickly and the show, although entertaining, can be a pile of crock to what the actual limitations and problems are.

Same with couponing.

Stores and coupons have limitations… and 400 boxes in one transaction or even 15 transaction is not always the truth. OFTEN your coupon has a limit of 4 per item. Some don’t have limits BUT the store does. Then there is the limit # per HOUSEHOLD, limit # per transaction, etc. And there are times you get lucky on both ends and there is NO limit at all.

The doubling that occurs for coupons on that show doesn’t happen around my area unless a limited time TRIPLE COUPON deal is going on. From my experience on watching the show (and trust me that I love to watch it lol) A LOT of rules are bent, A LOT. Doubling ON AVERAGE, in stores that have the ability to, is up to .99 cents. Not the $1.98 you typically see on Extreme Couponing.

So just a heads up, is it possible to get your items for little to nothing? ABSOLUTELY!

But when it comes to 199 bottles of Vitamin Water, or 300 Dog Can foods in one transaction, with what seems like triple doubling, no limitations on coupon or store it’s a little tough and in many places not very often possible. I never say never because it can and probably does happen. BUT for right now, NORMAL couponing is enough to stock pile your home and still keep you paying less. No need to have 1000’s of coupon inserts to get yourself stable with cheap to free household items. Little by little! :)

Well until next time!

Snag Alert: MORE FREE Bic Razors and Poise Towelettes or Poise Feminine Wash

JUST PAY TAX... $2.05 for 80 Disposable Razors and 80 Wipes
I went to Wal-Mart after work today to snag these awesome freebies!

I got 4 packs of BIC Silky Touch Disposable Razors (10 pack making that 40 razors) and 4 Poise Moist Towelettes (20 wipes in a pack) for a whopping..... DRUM ROLL PLEASE $1.38

The $1.38 was TAX and TAX alone! All of my items were free and the overage went towards my tax! My mother bought anout 4 packs of razors (40 total for .67 cents which was also just her tax) making our combined total $2.05 spent! :)

My latest items: 8x packs of 10 razors (moms 4 packs included) for a total of 80 disposable razors. And 4 packs of 20 Poise Towelettes for a total of 80 wipes = $2.05 which was JUST the tax :)

Here's my receipt for today's trip showing you what I mean! :) Take into account this does not have my mother's pack of 4 BIC razors. This is just my trip of 4 packs of razors and 4 Poise Towelettes for a total of $1.38 :)

DID YOU KNOW?
The greatest thing about Wal-Mart is if you find an item CHEAPER than your coupon you get the left over amount in cash or applied to your remaining balance including tax??? AWESOME!

For example: you are buying mustard at $1.00 BUT your coupon is $1.50, you would get the .50 cents applied to your total making another product less than what it was! If your total is zero completely the .50 cents would be given in cash :)

Scenario broken down:
***Buy mustard @ $1.00 x .07 (tax) = 1.07
$1.07 -$1.50 (coupon) =-.43 cents
I have an overage applied to my total leaving my total -.43 cents. The Walmart will pay me in cash .43 cents since I have nothing owed including tax so it can't be applied as payment.

================================================================

***Buy mustard @ $1.00, buy pack of gum @ .75 cents = $1.75 total x .07 (tax) = 1.87
I have a coupon for $1.50 for the mustard which makes the mustard free leaving me with .50 cents overage towards my total.

$1.87 -$1.00 = .87 cents
.87 - .50 (overage) = .37 cents for the mustard and gum with tax.

Or easier math: (I wanted to break it down to a "T" to get you used to the process in my previous math example) $1.87 (total with tax) - $1.50 (coupon)  = .37 cents
==================================================================

TO SNAG THIS PARTICULAR SET OF ITEMS YOURSELF:

***Use $3/1 (3 dollars off one) Any BIC Disposable Razor Coupon found in the Smart Source Insert (SS) that was in the papers 3/17/13 the expiration (EXP) date is 4/14/13. You can use 4 coupons on your trip.

Wal-Mart is selling the BIC Silky Touch Disposable Razor at $2.96 - $3.00 get .04 cents overage per item. (4x = .16 cents)

+++Translate to Coupon Lingo+++
$3/1 Any BIC Disposable Razor SS 3/17/13 EXP 4/14/13. Limit 4.

=============================================================
***Use $3/1 (3 dollars off one) Poise Feminine Products found in the Smart Source Insert (SS) that was in the papers 4/7/13 the expiration date is 5/18/13. You can use 4 coupons on your trip.

Wal-Mart is selling the Poise Feminine Wipes and Feminine Wash @ $2.97 - $3.00 get .03 cents overage per item.(4x =.12 cents)

+++Translate to Coupon Lingo+++
$3/1 Poise Feminine Products SS 4/7/13 EXP 5/18/13. Limit 4.

"Where do I get MORE Coupon Inserts???"

Make Nice Like Good Little Boys and Girls

So besides buying an insert in a Newspaper at approximately $1.50 a pop and getting 1 insert up to 3 if it’s a good week. If you are anything like me, I LOVE the inserts but feel so bad about all the newspapers I’m left with. I hate wasting it so I give it to family but often times I’m still left with a lot of them.

How do you go about getting more inserts without all of the newspaper mess and possibly for FREE???

 A few ideas:
Visit your local recycling plant
I’ve heard that this place tends to be one of hidden treasures and by treasures I mean INSERT PANDAMONIUM lol Apparently you can find A LOT here. I haven’t tried this yet but I found my recycling center and it’s super close! :) So check them out! You might have one close by and you didn’t even know it! Make sure the plant recycles NEWSPAPERS.

Recycle Dumpster Dive
Ok, now I have yet to personally do this but I have read quite a few times that people have had a lot of luck. Some have even asked their neighbors while others just plough right in. They wait for trash day and have at it. Now there’s no need to do this if you don’t want to or you feel too weirded out by the idea of going head first into your neighbors recyclables or even a convenient store recycle bin. You COULD just ask your neighbors if they are not into couponing to kindly give the inserts to you. Often times you will find they are happy to!

Play nice with your mailman
Now my particular mailman apparently always leaves everyone just the front page of Red Plum and keeps the coupons (which irks me to no end and after much attempts to correct that issue it’s never been fixed). When I called the post office to see how I could go about getting an insert intact (I spent 2 years patiently awaiting and seeing that I NEVER got a full Redplum insert delivered), the same paperboy came back to give me a new one.
His version of "new" was writing my apartment number on it and ripping up, JUST the first page again, and sticking it into my mail slot. Which bothered the bejesus outta me even more… but mostly for the fact it was only the first page again!

COME ON THE FIRST PAGE AGAIN?!!! Couldn’t you at least have brought the whole thing and ripped that up so I could see you actually DELIVER WHOLE INSERTS! GEEZ! lol  Glad to see people doing their jobs lololol He’s lucky I work when I get mail, because I would have gladly waited outside of my steps to see if he would give me the front page again lol.

(Two people probably fighting over inserts as the Paperboy passes lol)
I’m not that crazy to fight for ONE insert but, mail men: if you see a tenant really does want theirs give that person THEIR MAIL. So SOME newspaper guys are obviously already helping someone else out (which is plain rude to steal from others and then be a complete jerk about bringing a new insert the next day)
BUT there are GOOD and HONEST mailmen that have a ton of LEFT overs that aren’t for a particular set of houses on his route. My mother has a stellar relationship at her job with a mailman there so she posed the question about left over inserts he has at the end of his route and he says they don’t do anything with it. So my mother asked if he could bring them to us. He asked us if we needed a set amount. The answer “All the ones you can spare!” Guess what? The mailman has agreed that he will bring all of his left over inserts to us! Costing us NOTHING. If this also happens to you consider making him or her a nice thank you box every month or so with a few items from your coupon bounty! They’ll appreciate it tremendously and you will continue to maintain a nice relationship of give and take! Both of you win :)  So on the up and up, God blessed me with getting inserts other ways without dealing with a rude mail man and in the end I’m going to make out better than just ONE insert - I WIN :)

Convenience Stores
I heard some convenience stores will also give them to you for free after midnight. It doesn’t hurt to ask! If they do agree to let you have them, every once in a while give them a couple of your coupon bounty items as a thank you!

Buy Newspapers
Worse comes to worse newspapers are still a good way to ENSURE you get inserts just check before you buy it to make sure they are in the paper! Your savings are still going to outweigh $1.50+ for the newspaper cost so no worries!

Check Local Areas
If you happen to be around these areas check for newspapers! Starbucks, Doctor’s offices AND libraries :) SOME libraries even have a coupon exchange box where you drop off your unwanted ones and substitute them for someone else’s discarded coupons! One man’s“trash” is another man’s treasure!

EBAY
I’m hooked on EBAY for coupons. Although you don’t get them free you can get A LOT of coupons at a fraction of the price of the newspaper. AND there are people who pre-cut them for you! So it’s less time consuming on your end. I currently have two sellers that I’m going to buy from on a very consistent basis. Reason being after all the coupons I purchased, the two sellers were FAST with shipping, had AMAZING prices on bulk inserts and were SUPER SUPER friendly. It was a pleasure doing business.

The one seller mentioned if you wanted any baby or pet coupons to your winning pile of Coupons (pre-cut and about 100+ each lot)to contact her and she would gladly add them. So I sent her a nice email stating I had a beautiful furbaby cat and if she had any cat coupons she could add to my pile both I and my fuzzbucket of love would appreciate it immensely. She responded by stating that she would gladly give me ALL of the cat coupons she had! And SHE DID! Cat coupons galore came on top of my winning coupon lot. She didn’t have to do that but she was SUPER sweet and did. That DEFINITELY made me a customer for as long as she’s selling!
My other seller had an awesome deal on 15 P&G inserts with free shipping so I bought from them. (Not to mention my Ebay bucks rewards brought down my total to under $3.00!When I received the packet they had added 12… I repeat 12 free inserts from previous weeks that still had a VERY GOOD AMOUNT of coupons that still had time to expire (all the way up to 6/2013). Talk about how happy I was! It was a surprise and took me aback on how sweet people can be! I contacted my seller to say how much I appreciated the generosity and that I was looking to buy coupons regularly from them. Turns out it was a wife and husband team, the husband responded and in conversation mentioned his wife had an account on Ebay and that both were linked together. If I didn’t see something on one I could find it on the other! So I have the feeling this is going to lead to a beautiful coupon buying friendship.

Don’t get me wrong all of the sellers I dealt with have been AWESOME. However I struck accord with a few that I thought really would work well with my coupon buying and personality. So when you buy on Ebay: keep in mind sellers that made you happy or you were pleased with and consider them in the future!

IMPORTANT:

EBAY Etiquette!
If you buy an item, please PAY FOR IT. I read so many seller’s descriptions on items stating MANY people have not paid after they bought the items resulting in opening Ebay dispute cases. One mother had a case every week for the past year!!!! If you run into a paying issue, INFORM THEM. They are willing to work with you!

Don’t give a seller grief about shipping price.
Just bid or buy another lot from someone else. In the store if something costs more than you are willing to pay or is higher than another retail chain you don’t automatically go crazy on the closest cashier about outrageous prices. You simply leave it and buy it elsewhere (at least NORMAL people do). So same here. Just because it’s the internet doesn’t mean it isn’t someone’s BUSINESS. Treat them with respect.

LEAVE FEEDBACK, even if your experience was less than perfect.
If you got a great item, take 5 seconds to leave a nice note for other potential buyers and to increase their seller scores! Especially if they left YOU feedback positively increasing your buyer reliability score. It’s the nice way to say THANKS for a great product and service.
IF… AND PLEASE FOCUS IN ON THIS ONE. IF you had a bad experience (and it does happen) contact the seller FIRST to resolve an issue. Do NOT leave negative feedback immediately. Negative feedback cannot be erased! It can be mutually withdrawn but it is a mess with Ebay as the mediator to correct the bad rating.

How do I know?
As a previous seller of items I’ve had similar issues with lack of feedback and on ONE occasion a negative which was mutually withdrawn JUST because the BUYER added extra information to the item after it SHIPPED!!!!! I never sold outside of the US, however a person in the UK really wanted the item. So I BENT my typical selling practice to accommodate him. I sent it out quickly, only to receive a negative feedback stating I hadn’t put it listed as “gift” on customs so he had to pay a little bit more money to get the item. Mind you, I got his email the day AFTER the item shipped. Had he messaged me first with what happened and the cost he incurred I would have GLADLY refunded him that. BUT I got that nasty mark on my score. I refunded him IMMEDIATELY and was adamant he should have come to me first. He apologized and started the process to withdraw that nasty negative rating. It is now listed as a mutual withdraw. However it was a long dragged out process that could have been resolved QUICKLY and with less stress on both ends if communication would have been used. My score is 100% with 200 feedback as both a seller and buyer. I pride myself in that, so do others!
********************************************************************************
Please just communicate with your seller - things can be resolved and after trying if STILL nothing gets fixed THEN leave the negative. TRY FIRST! Trust me we WANT your business we WANT you to be happy. Not everyone in the world is out to get you, I PROMISE! :)

You Gotta Fight For Your Right to Coupon

You Gotta Fight For Your Right to… COUUUUUPON!

So yesterday I was lucky enough to get some of the razors that were money makers @ my nearest Rite Aid. I got the last 2.

But 2 is better than none so I took those razors and ran like a coupon bandit to the register.

As my mother and I rang up the two razors I gave the man my coupons. He scanned the one fine when he went to the other it would not accept it.

So he looked up and said I couldn’t use the coupon.
So I politely asked why was that.
He stated the register wasn’t accepting it and I could only use one.
I politely told him it’s because the coupon exceeded the amount of the item and the coupon had to be priced down in order for it to work according to their coupon policy, and that I was able to use up to 4 coupons in one shopping trip, 1 per item as stated in the coupon’s fine print.

So he took a deep sigh as though I had asked him to cross the Euphrates River with nothing but a purple dinosaur swimmy. He grunted he had to call his manager. And I was more than happy to wait for her.

When she arrived he explained to her my situation and asked if I could even use another coupon since I used one. The manager looked at the coupon, and I told her clearly it states I can use one per item up to 4 in the same trip and I was only using two. He was very adamant that I couldn’t use two coupons. She agreed that I was in the clear for using my coupons (YESSSSS) as long as I had two items which I did. So he asked his manager if it was even possible for me to get it, it’s less than the item price. So I kindly referred to their coupon policy stating it could be priced down and that I had the coupon policy on my phone straight from their website (GO ANDROID PHONE! Lol) (I have no ink for my printer right now lol). The manager didn’t even look at the policy she looked at the cashier and said yeah we can do that. Just price the item to 2.99. And with that he did.

My total? .42 cents.

As I finished my transaction he was shaking his head. My mother being the feisty woman she is said “In this economy you have to survive”. I didn’t even notice him shaking his head frankly I didn’t care. He could have shook his head until the contents rattled like a maraca, I was not concerned with his loss of the extra 2 minutes it took for him to call a manager and for her to arrive. My eyes were focused on my bounty of 20 razors. And at the end of my receipt there were $4.00 beautiful +UP rewards waiting. Ahhhhh… money made for buying items I use. Who’s laughing now buddy boy?

I’m sure I’ll bump into the Music Man again in Rite Aid as I see him working all the time.
And the next time I’m in his line again I’ll be waiting with the same smile to challenge his “no”.

Things Learned:
Some people are just miserable in life.
Training at a job not always covers things like inside and out coupon knowledge.
Keep your coupon policies with you and know them.
Wait for a manager if need be, there are other registers and if not those people can thank the cashier that doesn’t know his/her own store’s policies.

Be prepared to confront misinformation. People are quicker to say “We can’t do this and/or You can’t use that” Than actually finding out. Question it. Be persistent.
Be POLITE at all times. Don’t be a crazy coupon lady (or man)! It’s not worth getting upset over razors or anything without a beating heart for that matter. Even the nasty cashiers or people, just stay calm. Things work out and if not just go to another store and coupon there.
When people shake their heads, blow it off. There’s nothing wrong with couponing. That’s what it’s there for. And if all else fails enjoy the soothing sounds of the maraca from the other person’s hollow head. Shame on them for looking down on you for being a sale GENIUS lol
Most importantly: Enjoy your bounty!

Cutting Coupons and Savings

eBay Coupons & Paper Trimmers

Yesterday I mentioned awaiting some of the eBay coupons I purchased and would update you all regarding my experience.

End result: AWESOME!

Talk about major savings! So the person I bought coupons for was auctioning 5 SmartSource inserts with expiration dates of 4/30-6/30. If you won the auction not only did you get the 5 you bought, the seller gave 10 MORE of the same inserts. 15 inserts! I got that for a steal at about 5 bucks + free shipping. Considering I spend 1.50 on each newspaper just for ONE specific insert I'll take a $5.00 steal over $22.50 for the same items without all of those newspapers! After all, I'm couponing to SAVE money and EBAY coupons definitely SAVES money.

And to put the cherry on top: the seller gave me a Red Plum insert with coupon expiration dates of 5/31-6/31 for FREE just for buying with them. Can you say loyal buyer? I will definitely purchase more from this particular seller. It was a win win situation!

It should come to no surprise that more coupons = more cutting. After cutting 2 inserts you might start feeling like the pile of 15 inserts in front of you will never be finished... not to mention what I call the purple thumb effect. It's kind of like the green thumb for gardeners only you get the purple thumb when cutting inserts and the scissors unfortunately start to create a sore spot and at times looks purple, red, and if you were really going at it white. The life sucked out of your poor thumb from all those savings. And let's not talk about the cramping in your hand which has the capacity of making your hand stay like a Chinese back scratcher when you're done cutting.

So what can you do?

BUY A PAPER TRIMMER!!!!!!!!!

I just purchased one yesterday because I knew tackling 15 inserts was not going to be easy and what could have taken me 5-6 hours easy took me about 2 hours. My hands thanked me... and it was the easiest fastest way. It's a really good investment. The one pictured above is the bad boy I got to help me with my coupon crazes. It is by Fiskars and is the 12 Inch By Pass Guillotine Paper Trimmer. I personally love guillotine trimmers, I find them to be more effective and less stress on my hand then a glided cutter. This particular cutter has a protection screen so I wont be able to cut my fingers, let's keep the cutting to money spent not my fingers!

It's super light weight, easy to setup, and very effective at cutting coupons.
Choose what works for you and your cutting style there's plenty of them. I bought mine at Michael's (and yes I used a 40% off coupon lol).

Advice:
If you are stacking like inserts and cutting multiple coupons at the same time make SURE you are not accidentally cutting bar codes and manufacturer dates! Same goes for individual cuts. Just be careful of your coupons and hands!

Now go out there cut those coupons and get those savings!

Born Again Couponer (1st Trip Since Hiatus!)

Born Again Couponer

So yesterday I went to CVS and did a pretty good job snagging some sales. I was able to get $188.81 worth of stuff for $30.00, 26 items total including 6 Tide Laundry detergents. Could I do better? Absolutely but for just starting all over again with just this week’s coupons I don’t think it was a bad deal at all!

The hardest thing about couponing is starting out, and even though I was more familiar with couponing since my very first time it felt kind of like trudging through mud. I was heading to the finish line but I was a little weighed down with limited coupons and remembering what I had learned.BUT no complaints! The sales I got were definitely 100 times over better than ANY sale WITHOUT coupons. So I’m super happy, after all working towards becoming a Coupon Goddess while wearing peasant novice coupon clothes is going to take some time to turn into fabulousness!

Two freebies this week to take advantage of before 4/7/13:

Clear Shampoo

It’s $4.99 if you go to the red box coupon center and use your cvs card you will get a $4.99 off coupon making this item FREE! Just pay tax J AND if you have a smart phone, download the IBOTTA app and you can get $1.25 rebate back on it (MONEY MAKER). Once you get $5.00 you can cash it out with your Paypal account. AWESOME! There is a 1 item limit per household, which means you can only buy one PER each CVS card.

Rescue Sleep and Rescue Pearls

It’s currently $8.99 and you get 8.99 ECB (Extra Care Bucks) back with your CVS card – it’s all natural and worth a try. They have a sleep and a stress one. It’s supposed to be an all-natural aid to help you sleep or relieve stress. Last night I tried the sleep one as I couldn’t sleep! It is a drop that dissolves on the tongue, it has a light natural taste of oils slightly fragrant not bad at all! And I knocked out like a light about 10 minutes later. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not. Be advised you will have to pay the $8.99 OoP (Out of Pocket), you will then receive the $8.99 back attached to your receipt. There is a 1 item limit per household, which means you can only buy one PER each CVS card.

Some terms I used with you will see me use often:

ECB = Extra Care Bucks  OoP = Out of Pocket

Ebay Coupon Update: In my previous blog I mentioned purchasing some Ebay Coupon lots, some are arriving today and I'm so excited! I will let you know my experience with them. I'm awaiting for the mailman, some sellers were awesome enough to include tracking so I've been able to hound the tracking site like a mad woman lol Right now some say IN TRANSIT and they are in my town out for delivery!!!! Wooooo! Anywho I will post an update sometime soon regarding my experience.

Well until next time my fellow baby couponers!

I've returned! For good this time!

I'm Baaaaaaaaack! Coupon Insert Tip

Sorry baby couponers I had a slight hiatus, but I'm back and am ready to start giving you inside tips of my couponing as you still embark on this adventure with me :)

I'm currently in the process of building my coupons back starting with this past Sunday's inserts. I've also tried (FOR THE FIRST TIME) buying coupons and coupon inserts off of Ebay!!! I'm so excited! I got some really great deals. So here's a new tip for those of you still out there. Check Ebay for inserts and weigh whether you are getting a deal or not buying the paper or buying the inserts.

I was able to snag 5 P&G saver inserts from this weekend for a whopping $2.50. That's definitely better on the money I spent for the newspapers just for the insert at $1.50 each. I spent $7.50 on Newspapers for the same 5 inserts and I was able to snag 5 of the same inserts for only $2.50!!! I'm going to have to check out Ebay more often.

I also snagged quite a few other coupons I was interested like 20x $1/24 Friskies Cat food coupons for another whopping amount of .99 cents and FREE SHIPPING. I can't beat that!

Word to the wise!

BE VIGILANT OF COUPON EXPIRATIONS ON EBAY.

Also be very mindful of the shipping time it will take to get coupons to you!

If there's a coupon or coupon insert thats being sold and the expiration date is 4/8/13 but the shipping estimated time is 4/5-4/15 it may not be the best coupon to purchase since it's cutting it close! Use caution and your own gut feelings.

ALSO,
PAY ATTENTION TO COUPONS!!!!!!!! If it is listed as a Military Coupon it is NOT the same as a Manufacturing coupon!!! They are good at military commissaries and exchange stores only. Please don't buy coupons you can't even use.

That's all for now I will write soon with policy updates, and a few things I was working on before my hiatus so check back soon!

CLIP IT, USE IT, LOVE IT... GOOD LUCK! <3

Coupon Policies, Limitations, and Requirements.... OH MY!

PAISAN! WELCOME BACK!
Welcome back fellow baby couponer! Just to sum up, we've discussed: organization, familiarization, utilization, manufacturers, coupon locators, and free items and giftcards. I think you are ready for stores now! We will take this slowly, don't worry! Today we are just going to focus on Store Policies and Coupon Requirements and Limitations.

THE EASE AND DIFFICULTY OF STORES
Stores can be both easy and hard at the same time. Why do I say this? Simple. Coupon Policies. Once you get used to them and understand them they are simple but other times they are a massive pain in the rear end of all things living. ESPECIALLY when each store is so very different. The more you frequent stores and plan your shopping trips it gets easier. BUT before it gets easier it's a hot mess of technicalities. But have no fear fellow baby couponer is here! We can do this!

WHAT IS A COUPON POLICY?
That's a certain limitation placed on coupon usage within a store. It gets a little complicated sometimes and a GOOD amount of times the employers at the store AREN'T familiar with it. This leads to being denied coupon use. HOWEVER if you know the coupon policy and you know you are well within limits challenge it. I learned this REALLY REALLY essential piece from Jenny Nordaby, whom you've heard me refer to as a honest to goodness coupon goddess. She was the one who opened my eyes to coupon policies, I NEVER even thought of that! So let me summarize what I learned from her.

When it comes to coupon policies of stores and supermarkets: PRINT IT OUT AND CARRY IT WITH YOU ALWAYS!

Why should you print out the policies?
In case you are told “no” at a store or supermarket to certain coupons pull out your handy dandy coupon policy and point out you are well within rights to use it. EVEN if this means asking for a manager. You'd be surprised how many employees do not know the policy and will give you a completely FALSE excuse on why you can't use it, EVEN MANAGERS. So you become the teacher at times! If you are still unable to use your coupon at the store and you KNOW your coupon is acceptable and the transaction met their requirements and your MFR (Manufacturer requirements) then feel free to call corporate and question the coupon and their policy as to why it was denied, etc, even though you were going to correctly use it.

Leave no store that you use coupons at unturned! Print them ALL out, even if you've never had problems at a store before with coupons it doesn't hurt to keep them with you. You never ever know when something in the future will arise: a new manager, a new cashier, etc.

HERE ARE SOME COUPON POLICIES!
Here are the coupon policies to some stores (you can find others online as well):

I, also, have ACME'S COUPON POLICY (straight from customer service) and am awaiting PATHMARK'S and CVS's. SO I will create a PDF for each and post that up with the next blog most likely :)

THE MAKING OF POLICIES SIMPLIFIED!
Don't worry if this has you confused! I am in the process of creating a “Policies Simplified” PDF for you all to download with each of the above mentioned policies. This will most likely be posted in the next Journey blog!
DO print out the above links as they are the ORIGINALS, so if you have to challenge a manager or employee you have the corporate coupon policy. Feel free to keep the one I am making as an easy reference for you to understand the policies better and quicker! So we will definitely come back to all of this, but for the mean time look it over and familiarize yourself with them. If you are confused about something my breakdown of their policies might help!

COUPON LIMITATIONS
Besides coupon policies what else is there?
Coupons have limitations sometimes themselves. SO in order to understand the coupon you have to obviously read what the coupon says. Sometimes it tells you something directly and boldly and other times it's in the fine print.

Here's some things to look for: (I got these directly off some of my coupons)

DO NOT DOUBLE (Usually this is found right next to the expiration date on the top of the coupon) For those of you who don't know already some stores double a coupon's price. AWESOME, huh? But there is a catch. Only SOME stores do this and a good amount only double up to $1.00. There are a few limited stores that double up to $2.00. So when you see that on a coupon it's telling the store not to double the amount in price: what you see is what you get.

Example of doubling:
You have a .75¢ off coupon for Dove Body Wash. Let's say the body wash is $1.29. Instead of getting the Dove for .54¢ which is a GOOD price but still not the GREATEST, the store doubles your coupon to $1.00. That Dove now went from $1.29 to .29¢. Not too shabby!

How do you know if a store doubles coupons or not? Ask customer service the next time you are in the store, or call and ask.

SOME STORES THAT DOUBLE MFR COUPONS
Around my area these stores do double coupons:

Acme
Genuardi
Pathmark
Shop Rite
Stop n’ Shop
SuperFresh
Wegmans

COUPON LIMITATIONS CONTINUED
EXCLUDES TRIAL SIZE (Usually this is found next to what the product is under the amount your coupon is worth). This means the coupon will NOT be accepted for a discount on a travel size item. AND YES YOU CAN DO THAT! For those of you that didn't know: less means MORE. What do I mean by that? Well, not ALL big priced items are gems when it comes to taking .95¢ off of a bulk item.

Example:
Let's say the Charmin 12 pk is $7.34, your coupon is .95¢ off of ANY Charmin. If you bought the 12 pk your final price would be $6.39 (Double MFR coupon final price = $6.35). BUT the Charmin 4 pk is on sale for $1.00. So if you used your coupon towards that it has now become .05¢! BUT WAIT it gets better! If you were at a store that doubles your coupon up to $1.00 that item went from .05¢ out of pocket to FREE you just pay tax! So depending on the stores policies and double coupon offerings you could get this item for .05¢ or pay just the tax.

Going back to trial sizes, with the less means more thing – if a coupon states ANY product of that brand or has no size limitation (has to be a 15oz bottle, etc) then trial sizes are fair game! Here's the trick though, you have to know whether the store will allow that or not. Some stores do, others don't.

LIMIT OF 4 LIKE COUPONS IN SAME SHOPPING TRIP (I see this a lot with P&G MFR coupons. This is located in the fine print on the coupon where it says: consumer. Typically this is at the bottom of a coupon under the image (vertically), and sometimes it is on the right side of the coupon if it's horizontal.) This goes HAND IN HAND with the limit 1 coupon per purchase statement below. This simply means you can use 4 coupons in your ONE visit to the store. Referring to the above: 4 coupons are for 4 individual items (per purchase). So in the store if you have 4 coupons cut out, you can get 4 items with each coupon discount. If you have more than 4 coupons and would like to use it you can always do so at another store of the same company in the same day, etc. You just can't use all 8 or so in the same checkout.

***IMPORTANT: you MUST have the extra coupons on hand. They will not scan the one coupon four times. That's why newspapers, etc, are golden tickets and are purchased a lot for the inserts. If it was as easy as reusing a coupon in one trip many of us would have more time for raiding stores! Hehehe

Example: (here's a recent purchase I did to explain)
There was a sale on Lady Speedstick deodorant for .99¢. I had a coupon for .75¢ off of ANY Lady Speedstick. The coupon itself did not state a purchase limit in one shopping trip. At the time I had 5 coupons for it. So I purchased 5 deodorants. My end result was .24¢ for each deodorant. NOW, my coupons did NOT double, due that 4 other coupons had already doubled. This particular store only doubles 4 coupons per household a day. I've also read that someone was told online that limit 1 coupon per purchase was denied doubling due that it's already reached a limit. I've not verified that at all but just passing on a possibility. I will look into that most definitely.

LIMIT 1 COUPON PER PURCHASE (This is usually found in the fine print below the items picture or if vertical: on the side of the items picture. This can be found at the very beginning of he fine print or can be found at the very end) This simply means that you can use ONE coupon on the purchase of each individual item aka “per purchase”. Every purchase of that particular item you have uses one coupon. If you have two products that equals two coupons. So unlike the limit of 4 like coupons, you can buy more than 4 unless the store prohibits them. So if you have 8 coupons with a limit 1 per purchase, you can buy 8 items in one transaction. (check the previous example: I got 5 deodorants, I was not limited to 4; I had 5 coupons and used it just fine). You can also stack coupons.

------------ STACK: This means to use store coupons with manufacturer coupons.

So with limit 1 coupon per purchase you may buy 5 items with a Manufacturer (MFR) coupon and use 5 store coupons. UNLESS the store coupon has a limit! So check BOTH coupons for limitations!

***DON'T FORGET!!!!: Starting out my common beginner mistake with 1 coupon was seeing a “twofer” sale (2 for 1 price) and would use only ONE of these coupons. So don't follow my footsteps! Lucky for me I figured that out pretty quick after my first few mistakes at one trip after mom asked me about it and DING DING DING a lightbulb went on. I was doing it all wrong!

SO for example:
You have a coupon that is $1.50 off 1 box of Kellog's Cereal Special K. There's a sale at CVS buy 2 for $4. You MAY use two of the $1.50 off coupons if you have it since there are TWO items (aka per purchase). SO with the 2 coupons you have $3.00 off right there. Subtract the $3.00 from the $4.00 sale price. You just bought 2 boxes of Special K for $1.00!

EVEN BETTER is when a reward is given back! LOOK for these!
Let's take the same above sample: the Special K and say that there was a $1 reward coupon printed out if you purchase 2. SO it would look something like this:

SALE: Buy 2 for $4 get $1 back in register rewards (or whatever the store calls it such as CVS is Extra Care Bucks, Rite Aid is UP+, etc)
You have 2x $1.50 off per box = $3.00
You pay out of pocket $1.00 (Sale price ($4-$3) coupon discounts = $1.00) BUT at the end of your receipt the $1.00 register reward printed out.
You just bought 2 boxes of Special K for free, you just paid tax on it!

This is how this all works! SEEK DEALS.

LIMIT 1 COUPON PER TRANSACTION (This is usually found in the same areas as the above mentioned limits on a coupon). This means you can only use 1 coupon per shopping trip. So instead of using a coupon per item you can only use 1 coupon in your ENTIRE purchase.

LIMIT 1 PER PERSON OR LIMIT 1 COUPON PER HOUSEHOLD or PERSON (This is usually found in the same areas as the above mentioned limits on a coupon or on a circular). This means that you can only use the coupon ONCE for the entire sale period. (Ex: CVS has a sale and the item states limit 1 per household. If you have 3 of the items coupons even though your coupon doesn't have a limit the store does.)

Can't I buy the item as many times I want anyway, who would know?
Usually the store has a savings card (CVS, RITE AID, etc) and in order for you to get the sale you would have to use your savings card with them. Once you do this the system already marks you off as reaching your limit. (On CVS coupons it will tell you how many offers you've reached limits for.) So when you go to ring up the item again using the same card, you won't get the offer. The only way around this is if you have another person or people in your household for the per person limitation. Make sure you have INDIVIDUAL cards instead of sharing them.

NOT TO BE COMBINED WITH ANY OTHER OFFER (Again this is found in the fine print, above or below) This means you can not use other discounts such as a student discount (senior citizen or military discount) with the coupon. You can not stack store coupons with it or combine similar offers with the same product. So if you are going to use this coupon – this coupon is the ONLY one you can use toward the item.

STORE REQUIREMENTS
Outside of couponing like I previously touched on, stores sometimes place limits in their circulars and store coupons. So always pay attention to how they are limiting you and the quantity. You might also have to meet a requirement for the item. See the next point MFR coupons.

MANUFACTURER REQUIREMENTS
Not only do manufacturers limit, at times, how many like items you may buy in one trip or per purchase they can also have a requirement that needs to be met in order to use the coupon. This can also happen with stores and goes HAND in HAND with MFR requirements.

For example:

Rite Aid is having a .99¢ sale on 1 Palmolive Dish Detergent with their store coupon. On their coupon it states that the Palmolive that is on sale is the 10oz one AND there is a limit of 4 Palmolives at that price with store coupons.

You have a 12 Palmolive coupons, each different price discount. For 6 of your coupons you have .50¢ off and for the other 6 coupons you have $1.00 off. Your coupons requirement is the following:
it can be on ANY Palmolive Dish Detergent. (This is great due that some coupons require a certain TYPE of the item like 50¢ off Palmolive ORIGINAL dish detergent, so if the floral smell Palmolive was on sale than this wouldn't work.)

SO you've met the ONE requirement for Store and MFR – it's Palmolive Dish Detergent.

As you read on your 12 coupons continue: ANY Palmolive Dish Detergent 20 oz or larger.
Your coupons no longer fit the requirement for both store and MFR. The store is on a 10 oz bottle – your coupon is on a 20 oz.

LET'S FLIP IT AND SAY YOUR COUPONS DO MEET REQUIREMENT:

So 12 of your coupons say “ ANY 10 oz bottles of Palmolive”.

You meet the requirement for both store and MFR what next?

Decide which coupon you are to use! REMEMBER you want to get the BEST deal possible and FREE is the best deal. Considering you have $1.00 you can get the Palmolive's free.

You can however only get 4 per transaction (due to the limit 4 in the store's coupon).

A good amount of stores CAN reprice your coupon, so if you have $1.00 off and the item is .99¢ the cashier can input the coupon to be .99¢ off for you to get the amount off (a good amount of stores do not give you the overage in this case the extra penny.) THIS INFORMATION WILL BE TOLD TO YOU IN THE STORES COUPON POLICY! However there are some stores that will not do that, if your coupon exceeds the amount of the item they do not price it down. In this case you have 6 other coupons that you can consider if it's a good deal or not.

Your 6 other coupons were for 50¢ off. Each bottle would be .49¢ instead of free. So four bottles would cost $1.96.

Again refer to the coupon policies to understand what the store WILL and WILL NOT do so that you can plan your shopping trip correctly.

SO UNTIL NEXT TIME....
In the end it all comes down to reading coupons and what they are asking of you. This means following directions not only on store coupons and MFR coupons but also directions and requirements set forth by the stores policies. It might seem like a lot to get used to or confusing at first but it really is very very simple when you get the hang of everything. Once you get familiar with it you will read a coupon and know exactly what you can and can't do without referring to this blog. I tell people a lot I enjoy couponing because it becomes sort of a game... like a puzzle. I personally LOVE puzzles such as the PennyPack Puzzles which have brain teasers galore (and here's a confession of my vice: I have a box of 60 PennyPack magazines still waiting to be done! EXCITING!!! hahaha) SO with couponing it takes time to match up deals, go through coupons and try to find the “missing yet MATCHING pieces” to get a great deal!

Like I stated previously I'm working on a PDF file that you will all be able to download that will have some stores and their policies broken down for beginners to understand. Think of it as a “Coupon Policy for Baby Couponers/Beginners” sort of thing! I know policies get real technical and fussy so not only will it help me to break policies down it will be much easier having a quick AND easy reference at stores (AGAIN print out the official policies and have them with you at all times as well!).

So go out my fellow baby couponers and explore some sales! Start off small if you are a little nervous or unsure. I will DEFINITELY be getting into coupon matching deals, and how to get the most bang for your buck and coupons. I will also be posting up in the very near future a blog on COUPON LINGO/JARGON for you all to familiarize yourselves with as I will be switching over to them as we go along so you can get used to them.

By now you should already know one: Manufacturer Coupons. The lingo/jargon for that I use and many others use is MFR or MFR coupons. Another word you learned today: Stack! (Remember? This is where you STACK store coupons with MFR coupons on 1 item.)

A lot of things to look forward to in this blog so definitely keep checking back! I typically try to have a new blog every 3 days at the most if I'm able to. So far that's been working pretty well :)

CLIP IT, USE IT, LOVE IT... GOOD LUCK! <3
